The Butch Shaw award is presented annually to Aroostook County boys and girls from classes B, C and D who are outstanding soccer players and also exemplify the characteristics of respect and sportsmanship.
The award is selected by a committee consisting of officials from the Northern Maine Board of Approved Soccer Officials.
Jonah Hudson of Presque Isle was the recipient for Class B boys and Savannah Rodriguez of the Wildcats and Searra Herbert of the Caribou Vikings shared the honor for Class B girls
In Class C, Houlton’s Kolleen Bouchard and Fort Kent’s Niko Naranja were the recipients.
Micayla Driscoll of Ashland and Hannah Nadeau of Madawaska were the co-winners for Class D girls, while Brayden Bradbury of Central Aroostook and Tobyn Blatt of the Maine School of Science and Mathematics were chosen for Class D boys.
Clyde “Butch” Shaw, a Mars Hill native, became a member of the NMBASO in 1972, making him one of the first officials of the sport in Aroostook County. He was also a well-known and respected varsity basketball and baseball coach at Presque Isle High School. He loved sports and was known for his motto “Hustle, Pride, Defense.” He was diagnosed with leukemia in July 1985 and passed away in October of that year.
The award in his name was established in 1986.
