Despite bolting to an early 10-point lead, the University of Maine at Presque Isle women’s basketball team was unable to hold on Sunday and fell at UM-Machias, 45-32.
It was the second consecutive loss to begin the season for first-year coach Gavin Kane’s squad, which had lost to Central Maine Community College on Friday in Auburn, 81-29.
In the most recent game, the Owls led 12-2 before the Clippers came back to take a seven-point lead at halftime and slowly extended the advantage throughout the second half.
The UMPI women shot just under 18 percent from the field and were outrebounded by a 49-35 margin.

The Owls’ Teagan Laweryson, a senior from Moscow, scored 11 points and Marissa Reagle, a freshman from Seattle, Washington, had seven points and nine rebounds. Brianna Losee, a senior from Pittsfield, posted eight boards.
In Friday’s opener, UMPI played a CMCC squad which had already played eight games and the Mustangs dominated throughout.
Poor shooting doomed the Owls as they shot just 23 percent from the floor. UMPI scored just 17 points over the final three quarters.
Laweryson paced the Owls with nine points and Kendra Silvers, a freshman from North Berwick, contributed eight points and five boards in her collegiate debut. Rhylee Wright, a sophomore from Frenchville, added seven points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
UMPI next hosts Becker College of Worcester, Massachusetts, in a contest to be played Sunday at noon.
