CARIBOU, Maine — Caribou Police Chief Michael Gahagan recently issued a press release notifying residents of the winter parking ordinance, which prohibits parking on any street, with a few exceptions, between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Nov. 1 to May 1.”
During this time, parking will be allowed “only in the north downtown mall parking lot along the retaining wall and in the Hatch Drive parking lot in the spaces along Hatch Drive.”
Laura Adams, administrative assistant for the Caribou Police Department, said the ordinance addresses a “plowing and safety issue,” as snow can pile up on roads if public works crews are not able to plow because cars are parked on the side of the street.
The chief added that individuals who park outside the permitted spots may be fined or vehicles may be towed at the owner’s expense.
Adams attested to the fact that Caribou police have towed vehicles in the past.
“We might issue a warning or find the driver of the vehicle,” she said, “but that’s not always possible. If we can’t find the driver, they will be issued a ticket and the vehicle will be towed off.”
Gahagan wrote that anyone with questions about the parking ordinance can call the department at 493-3301.
