115 Years Ago – Nov. 25,  1902

New service On Monday, Dec. 8, regular train service will begin upon the new Fish River railroad, between Ashland and Fort Kent.  This date has been absolutely fixed by by the officials of the road and the time schedules are in process of arrangement.  The freight shed and round house at Fort Kent are already completed, and the rails are laid aow nearly into that place, and it is expected they will all be laid before the close of this week.

100 Years Ago – Nov. 29, 1917

Generosity — The large grocery firm of Milton, Poland and Bishop have very generously extended invitations to one hundred of the poor of the village to partake of a Thanksgiving dinner in Odd Fellows Hall Thursday.  This is indeed, a noble and praiseworthy act, and one which will redound  to the credit of the donors.

Too much An Orono man received an envelope from a United States military camp in France, directed in the handwriting of this son, but containing only a note from the censor which read, “Your son is well, but his letter was too newsy. The Censor.”

75 Years Ago – Nov. 25, 1942

Aeronautics offered –Over 40 townspeople met on Monday evening, Nov. 23 at the Caribou High School where they registered with school officials in the interest of an evening school session being formed.  A tabulation of interests showed that enough people were present to warrant the opening of the school, Monday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. for courses in stenography, typing, bookkeeping, sewing, Americanization and English.

Holiday favorites — Donnelly’s Market on Limestone Street in Caribou is having a free delivery service for for all of your holiday favorites.  Plum and fig pudding just 15 cents, a can of cranberry sauce anywhere between 20-30 cents, poultry seasoning 25 cents, all flavors of jello, 10 cents, mincemeat, package 15 cents, shelled walnuts, 25 cents a can, pumpkins 2 cents per pound, and a dozen of tomato juice 59 cents.  

50 Years Ago – Nov. 29, 1967

Limestone names new manager — Carl H. Carlson, a resident of New Sweden for many years, has accepted a post as  town manager of the town of Limestone, and has already assumed his duties in that community.  Carlson replaces David Harpine, who resigned the town managership to accept a position as director of Urban Renewal in Caribou.

Santa visits Caribou Santa, his reindeer, and elves arrived in Caribou Saturday in the third annual Christmas parade.  The Catholic Youth Organization, Methodist Youth Organization, Universality Youth Organization, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Jaycees, Caribou Lions Club, and Stepperettes all participated with floats in the parade.  The Caribou High School band provided music for the parade with the Majorettes resplendent in red uniforms resembling Santa’s costume.

25 Years Ago – Nov. 25, 1992

Ribbon-cutting A ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday, Nov. 13, celebrated the grand opening of Eyecare Associates, located in the former Maine Public Service building on Bennett Drive in Caribou.  In attendance for the official ceremony were, from left, Roy Doak, city councilman; Vicki Smith, executive director, Caribou Chamber of Commerce; Jacqueline Varnum, office manager; Dr. Mark S. Varnum, owner; and Mark Sleeper, the chamber’s first vice president.
