100 Years Ago – Nov. 28, 1917

   And the winner is Eben Hunter of Hodgdon and Dr. J. G. Potter were the lucky guessers on the pumpkin donated by Howard Tingley, their guess being 44 pounds while it weighed 43 3/4 pounds. The prize money was divided. The pumpkin was sold at auction to John M. Adams and the entire proceeds, amounting to $9.25, was given to the local chapter of Red Cross.

    Red Cross knitting The women of the Ricker Travel Class met on Monday, with Mrs. Chas. Atherton. Instead of the usual knitting and sewing, they have turned in the following to the Red Cross: five sweaters, five helmets, eight pairs of socks, one knit bandage, two pairs of mittens and 55 triangular bandages.

75 Years Ago – Nov. 19, 1942

    New job Donald MacIlroy, who has been employed in the Market Square Atlantic and Pacific Store, has accepted a new position at the Houlton Theatre.

    New postmaster John A. Crawford was appointed recently as assistant postmaster at the Houlton Post Office, the appointment being  effective Monday, Nov. 16. Mr. Crawford began his work as substitute in 1941 and has been employed steadily since 1919. He is a graduate of Houlton High School and Bryant Stratton College of Boston. He succeeds Mrs. John Doherty whose resignation became effective August 1.

50 Years Ago – Nov. 29, 1967

    Hammond to join Marshall B. Hammond, editor of the Houlton Pioneer Times for the past five years and editor and publisher for the past two years, will become executive director of the Houlton Regional Development Corporation as of Jan. 1. John R. Faulkner, who has been advertising manager of the Pioneer Times since 1963, will replace Mr. Hammond as publisher. The appointment of an editor is expected to be made in the near future.

    And the winner is Janet Heath, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Heath, won the 21-inch color television set that was offered in conjunction with the annual Rotary Club radio auction.

25 Years Ago – Nov. 25, 1992

   Turkey time The American Legion Post 47 of Houlton held its annual seniors Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday. Over 168 people were served. Among those who helped were Linwood Jameson and Joanne Cunliffe in the kitchen. Dinner was cooked, served and the cleanup was done by Legion members, family and friends.

   70 years — Houlton BPW members, past presidents and state officers met at Joe’s Restaurant on Nov. 18 to observe 70-years of the club’s local activities. Past District Director Mildred McIntosh and Past State President Kay Bell presented a program of the club’s history, important events such as state conventions and board meetings held in Houlton.
