On Saturday, Nov. 18, the Island Falls VFW Post No. 7529 held its monthly supper, which was baked ham and roast turkey with all the fixings, prepared by Chef Gray Hawk and co-worker Mariette.
The weather co-operated and many were there to enjoy a good, home-cooked meal and to mingle with friends and acquaintances. Following the meal a turkey raffle was held and many turkeys were won, plus pies, to go on the table on Thanksgiving Day.
A recent overnight guest of Charlene Webb has been her niece, Christina Moores, who has since returned to her home in Waterville.
Malcolm Palmer and Mr. and Mrs Ken Rupley have closed their summer homes and have returned to more warmer climes for the winter, one to Englewood, Fla., and the Rupleys to Georgia.
So far, we have been lucky in the fact that we have had no snow to contend with, so it has been easy for me to dash out and fill my bird feeders. I am finally getting a few more birds now and the other day I saw three mourning doves on my front lawn, pecking away at some goodies in the grass there. My chickadees have increased from one or two to about six, and the blue jays and woodpeckers are here now.
Since it has gotten colder I am now mixing peanut butter and lard and putting it out on the limbs of the cedar tree, where it is soon gone, as the blue jays and woodpeckers make short work of it. The smaller birds enjoy it while they can.
I am still seeing an occasional deer out back and am hoping that they will soon be regular visitors.
