CARIBOU, Maine — The Aroostook Junior Huskies’ football team handed out its end-of-the-season awards recently.
The team, made up of junior high-aged youth, competed in the Maine Independent Football League and played six games during the months of September and October. The Huskies compiled a 2-4 record in a league which also includes teams based in Millinocket, Houlton and Madawaska.
David Hubacher, a seventh-grader from Easton and the Huskies’ starting quarterback, captured the President’s Award for Outstanding Individual. Cole Nadeau, an eighth-grade running back and safety from Presque Isle, was named Offensive Player of the Year.
Oliver Peterson of Caribou, an eighth-grader who played defensive end and linebacker, led the team in sacks, while also running back kicks and playing running back on offense. He was selected Defensive Player of the Year.
Dominick Poisson of Presque Isle and Logan Cray of Caribou were the Huskies’ co-captains and were solid players on defense, according to Head Coach Adam Fantasia.
The Huskies’ roster featured four girls in Chloe Kirschmann of Caribou and Victoria MacIntosh, Sierra Ginn and Sydney Eaton, all of Presque Isle. Kirschmann and Ginn started almost every game on the offensive line and joined MacIntosh as Huskies playing multiple years.
Other team members were Michael Baugh, Ashton Beauchamp, Christopher Corbin, Collin Gamble, Logan Lapointe, Eric Pitre, Landon Trombley and George Whitmore, all of Caribou; and Shawn Doak and Austin Maynard, both of Washburn.
Joining Fantasia on the coaching staff were Dan Amero, Josh Goodale and Frank Lagasse.
The Minutemen team from Millinocket was first in the league with a 6-0 record. Houlton was second at 4-2 and the Huskies in third with their 2-4 mark. The Valley Mustangs were winless in six games.
