Carlisle swim teams sweep WA

LIMESTONE, Maine — The Carlisle girls and boys swim teams opened their season at the Limestone pool Saturday with convincing wins over visiting Washington Academy. The girls won by a score of 122-24, while the boys were also impressive in rolling to a 73-45 win. Swimmers from Fort Fairfield also competed, but did not field complete teams.

In the relays, the Carlisle girls had a great day. They finished first and second in the 200 medley relay with the team of Abby Espling, Emily Stillion, Madelyn Wing and Kyra Thibeault clocking a winning time of 2:20.55. Carlisle also had a first and third in the 200 freestyle relay, with Grace Kurtz, Scout Spencer, Brooke Rethman and Elizabeth Deschenes turning in a winning time of 2:30.39. The team also completed the relays with a first and second in the 400 freestyle relay, with Wing, Espling, Thibeault and Stillion prevailing in 4:38.94.

The boys’ relay teams turned in a strong performance. The team of Chris Parent, Harrison Ma, Jay Philbrick and James Lau won the 200 medley relay in 2:15.08. Spencer Soucy, Seth Farina, Parent and Martin Brozman took second in the 200 freestyle relay in 2:26.65, while Philbrick, Soucy, Lau and Ma won the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 5:21.

Individually, the results were solid for Carlisle. On the girls’ side, the 200 freestyle saw Espling, Thibeault and Deschenes finish first, second and third, respectively. Espling had the fastest time of 2:50.65. WA’s Sophie Holm won the 200 individual medley in 3:11.04 with Carlisle’s Kurtz and Abigail Raymond in second and third, respectively.

Carlisle went one, two and three in the 50 free. Anna Leob was tops in 34.49 seconds and was followed by Libbee Currie and Rethman. Fort Fairfield’s Anika Benson swam exhibition and actually had the top time in the event at 32.28. The 100 butterfly was won by Carlisle’s Madelyn Wing in 1:05.59. Riley McNeal took second.

In the 100 Freestyle, Carlisle again took the top spots. Spencer was tops in 1:20.15 with Currie and McNeal following. Fort Fairfield’s Cassidy Coiley also swam exhibition and topped the field with a time of 1:04.2. The 500 freestyle saw Wing grab her second individual win in 5:56.62 while McNeal took second.

The 100 backstroke saw Raymond place first in 1:19.61, followed by Thibeault and Espling. Again, Coiley swam exhibition and had the top event time clocking in a 1:13.98. In the final individual event, Stillion took first in 1:23.51 followed by WA’s Holm in second. Deschenes took third for the home team. Fort’s Benson swam exhibition in 1:39.29, which was the third fastest time.

On the boys’ side, Washington Academy got the win in the 200 freestyle as Matyas Nachtigal put up a time of 2:03.69. Martin Brozman and Soucy, both of Carlisle, finished second and third. WA’s Nick Luuring took the win in the 200 individual medley in 2:47.67. In the 50 freestyle, Parent won the event for Carlisle in 32.8 with Griffin Demon of WA taking second and Carlisle’s Seth Farina in third. Fort Fairfield swimmer Jason Bernaiche had the top time swimming exhibition with a 28.77, while Austin Cote of Fort Fairfield also competed.

WA’s Nachtigal got his second win of the meet in the 100 butterfly in 1:11.39 with Jay Philbrick second for the home team. In the 100 freestyle, Isaac Atkinson of the visiting Raiders won in 1:11.6 and was followed by Soucy and Farina of Carlisle in second and third. Fort’s Cote also competed.

In the 500 freestyle, Lau took the win for the home team in 7:38.10. WA’s Atkinson got his second win of the event in the 100 backstroke in 1:28.46 and was followed by Carlisle swimmers Brozeman and Parent in second and third. Fort’s Bernaiche turned in the top time in exhibition with a 1:12.44. In the final individual event, Carlisle swept the top three spots with Ma in first (1:20.70), Philbrick in second and Lau in third.

Haleigh York and Hannah Clark also participated for Carlisle, who will swim again at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Gentile Hall swimming pool located at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. The team will host perennial powerhouse Old Town.
