Donations are down for Salvation Army

HOULTON, Maine — Donations are down this year for the Houlton Salvation Army’s red kettle campaign, but officials are optimistic that more money will come in during the days leading up to Christmas.

“We are always thankful for any donations from the community, but we are behind last year’s numbers at this point,” said Captain Frank Nataluk of the Houlton Salvation Army. “Our goal for Aroostook County is $53,000.”

Nataluk did not disclose exactly how far behind the Salvation Army is with its fundraising. A lack of individuals willing to serve as bell ringers is a contributing factor.

According to Patricia K. James, public relations manager for The Salvation Army in Portland, donations are down on a statewide level.

“With income from the Christmas Kettle Campaign lagging behind expectations, The Salvation Army is encouraging the public to help the organization meet its annual goal by contributing generously during the ‘Kettle Blitz Day,’” she stated in a press release.

The Divisional “Red Kettle Blitz” is a one-day competition among Salvation Army corps throughout the Northern New England Division. This year’s event takes place Thursday, Dec. 14, throughout Northern New England.

All monetary donations, including checks, count toward the statewide competition with the local Houlton branch having the opportunity to win up to $3,000 to benefit those in need.

“Kettle Blitz Day is intended to draw attention to society’s casualties, individuals and families who are struggling to survive,” James said. “The Salvation Army assists them by providing food, clothing and, of course, toys for youngsters at Christmas. Last year in Northern New England, The Salvation Army assisted 146,643. individuals during the holidays and throughout the year.”

This year, The Salvation Army set a goal of $2,139,854 in its Northern New England Division which covers Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. The Red Kettles, more than 300 in the NNE Division, are located at major retailers and manned by bellringers and, occasionally, brass musicians.

Income from the red kettles not only helps during the Christmas season but throughout the year, making it even more important that the 2017 goal will be met, according to James.

In Houlton, red kettles are located at Wal-Mart, Mardens, Andy’s IGA and County Yankee.

Nataluk also noted that the Houlton branch’s annual “Toy and Christmas basket” distribution will be held Wednesday, Dec.20, but additional items are still needed to make that happen.  Items that people can donate include: stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, potatoes, rolls and pies. The Salvation Army will be purchasing turkeys.
