Island Falls notes (week of December 13, 2017)

Mrs. Herschel (Muriel) Fogg has returned home after driving down to Madison, near Skowhegan, to enjoy Thanksgiving with her daughter and husband, Sandra and Dwayne MacArthur and family.

During her week there they toured the area and did some shopping, plus a lot of catching up on news from home. The weather was very good as we have had little, or no, snow, so that the driving was no problem this year.

On Dec. 5, the Island Falls Historical Society held its annual cookie sale, which was held in the Tingley House, starting at 9 a.m. It was well attended and there was a great variety of cookies to choose from — some plain and some really decorated for the upcoming holiday.

Last year there was quite a bit of snow on the ground when the cookie sale was held, but this year the ground was bare and the weather not too cold. I haven’t heard yet how the sale went, but am sure it was successful. The proceeds will go toward the upkeep of the Tingley House.

I am still seeing quite a few birds at my feeders, but certainly not as many as I have had in the past. I finally saw some finches, but only one or two where I used to see a least eight or 10. The nuthatches and chickadees are always there, and lately I have had two woodpeckers. They all really like the peanut butter and lard mixture I put on the cedar limbs for them.

One day recently I spied not one, but three big gray squirrels, but they don’t bother the feeders now that there are only spicy seeds in them. They do get up in the tree to see if there is anything left of the peanut butter and lard mixture, and if there is any left, they polish it off quickly.

I had the pleasure of watching six deer on my back lawn the other morning about 6:30, and it was fun watching the two young ones playing — leaping here and there and chasing one another, while the grown-ups grazed quietly, just watching.
