100 Years Ago – Dec. 12, 1917

    Business trip Mr. Geo. W. Cressy, proprietor of the Houlton Optical Mfg. Co., left for Boston Saturday evening on a business trip. He will purchase several new machines while away.

    At Auburn meeting Charles H. Fogg, vice-president of the Maine Automobile Association, left Monday evening for Auburn, where he will attend the annual meeting.

75 Years Ago – Dec. 2, 1942

    Sales The people of Houlton purchased in excess of $32,000 of war savings bonds and stamps during Women in War Week, a tabulation of all sources of sales reveals. This is not far from 10 percent of of the total goal of $350,000d which sales during the month of December must reach to purchase the Aroostook Bomber which is the aim of county committee members.

    Birthday Mrs. Angie Manson, observed her 94th birthday anniversary December 1. Mrs. Manson, widow of Ezekial Manson, was born in Amity but has lived on the North Road for 50 years.

50 Years Ago – Dec. 13, 1967

    Awarded Two Houlton men received 25-year pins during a recent meeting of the Aroostook County Schoolmasters Club. The presentations were made by Dr. Clifford O. T. Wieden, president of Aroostook State College, and a charter member of the club.Receiving the 25-year pins were Roy Bither and Charles Wood of Houlton, Clifford McGaughy and Stanford Stromback of Mars Hill, Franklin Cunningham and Nilford Sawyer of Presque Isle, Everett Cunningham and William Foster of Washburn, Kenneth Clark and Richard Lord of Fort Fairfield.

    Tour Sixth grade students from Littleton Consolidated School were given a tour of the Telephone Company office in Houlton. They were accompanied by their teacher, Cecil Williams. They students were shown some of the intricate workings of the telephone exchange by Clair Lambert. They were also shown how the switchboards are operated by Chief Operator Edna Cunliffe.

25 Years Ago – Dec. 9, 1992

   Scholarship Eileen M. Hunt of Island Falls, has been awarded a Marshall Scholarship for graduate study in Britain. Hunt is one of only 36 Marshall scholars selected from colleges and universities throughout the United States this year, and one of only seven students from the the northeast. The Marshall Scholarship will permit Hunt to study English at Cambridge University.

   Campaign — Needy children, who might otherwise wake to a bleak Dec. 25, just may get that special toy or clothing they’re wishing for, if Ames Department Stores, The Salvation Army, American Express and concerned people can make Ames 1992 holiday donation program as successful as last year’s.
