MARY HOCH CREIGHTON, CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Mary Hoch Creighton passed away after a hard fought battle with breast cancer on November 20, 2017, at her daughter’s home in Charlottesville, VA. She was born in Ada, Minnesota on September 22, 1941, and grew up in Bellevue, Ohio with her parents, the late Merrill and Vivienne Lee, and six brothers and sisters.
Mary graduated from Northwestern University with a BA and received a Master’s degree in Education from Johns Hopkins. She taught at Mount Eagle Elementary, Falls Church High School and Woodson High School. Teaching was a passion for Mary and she made a difference in thousands of students’ lives.
Mary was also passionate about her husband, grand-children, quilting, ice cream, visiting Maine, traveling with friends and family, crossword puzzles, Bryce Harper and the PBS evening news. Over the years, she spent many hours volunteering at her church, Good Shepherd Housing and Meals on Wheels.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Merrill and Vivienne Lee; son, Kip Hoch; and brother, Jack Lee. She is survived by her husband, Charlie Creighton; daughter, Lisa Burch and her husband, John Burch and children, Chris, Mary, Joseph and Matthew Burch; three sisters, Cynthia (Russ) Ryden, Alice (Barry) Bickhart and Charmaine (Wayne) Amos; two brothers, Chuck Lee and Harold (Dawn) Lee; lots of nieces and nephews; her best friend, Patricia Kelly, and countless other friends who we hope will remember her with love.
A celebration of Mary’s life was held November 29, 2017, at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, Va.
