Bouchard, Wheaton and Guerrette on preseason watch list

Houlton’s Kolleen Bouchard and Presque Isle’s Emily Wheaton are among the top 10 players to watch in Maine North girls basketball this season, while the Wildcats’ Griffin Guerrette made the top 10 for North boys in the Bangor Daily News High School Basketball Outlook supplement published Dec. 14.

The seniors were the three Aroostook County players recognized by the publication.

Bouchard, a 6-foot senior guard, averaged 24.3 points, 8.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 3.8 blocked shots and 2.1 steals per game in leading the Shiretowners to a third straight regional championship. She is a three-time Bangor Daily News All-Maine Schoolgirl Basketball Team selection.

“She’s a special player. She controls a game. She can penetrate and she also gets her teammates involved,” said Hermon coach Chris Cameron.

“She is a great floor general,” said Houlton coach Shawn Graham. “She can score, she can defend, she’s a great shot blocker, she runs our fast break and she has improved her long-range shooting.”

“Her basketball IQ is one of her best attributes,” said former John Bapst coach Mike Webb. “She’s probably the best all-around player around.”

Wheaton, a senior guard, averaged 18.9 points, 4.7 assists and two steals per game. She was a third-team BDN All-Maine selection.

“She’s the best point guard in the class, without a doubt,” said Webb.

“She’s a very good ball-handler who can create her own shot. She can step back and shoot it or take it all the way to the rim,” said Cameron.

“She can do it all,” said Graham.

Guerrette has made his presence known around the Big East Conference since his freshman year, and the All-Aroostook selection last season figures to be one of the top point guards in the region this winter.

He put up solid numbers (14.8 points per game on 37 percent shooting from the 3-point line) as a junior for coach Terry Cummings’ Wildcats.
