Monday will be yet another busy day on the basketball court as several teams will be in action.
The Greater Houlton Christian Academy boys head north to take on Van Buren at 6 p.m. The Eagles are 1-3 on the season with second-year coach Justin Speirs and are coming off a tough loss to Hodgdon over the weekend.
The Hodgdon boys (3-1) are also in action as they travel to Woodland for a 6:30 p.m. contest., while Southern Aroostook (2-2) has the tall order of taking on Houlton (2-1) at 7 p.m. on the Shires’ home court.
The Central Aroostook girls go for their first basketball victory for new head coach Dillon Kingsbury with a game at Fort Fairfield Monday at 7 p.m. The Panthers have dropped their first two games against talented teams in Houlton and Southern Aroostook.
The Washburn boys are also winless (0-3) and make the trip to Easton to take on the Bears (2-2) at 7 p.m.
Also on Monday, Ashland plays a doubleheader against Wisdom in St. Agatha. The girls’ game is at 5:30 p.m. and the boys’ game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip off.
The following is a recap of games played Friday and Saturday.
Girls Basketball
Ashland 51, Easton 28 — The Hornets defeated the Bears for the second time in eight days Friday, establishing a 12-point lead at the end of the first quarter and rolling to the win.
Amber Chasse led Ashland (2-1) with 16 points and Cami Deabay posted eight.
Isabelle Morin tallied 16 points for the 0-3 Bears.
Van Buren 41, East Grand 31 — At Van Buren Friday, Sophie Rioux netted 12 points to help the Crusaders improve to 2-1. Tiffany Morrow scored 11 points for Van Buren.
Mallory Gilman’s game-high 13 points paced 0-3 East Grand of Danforth. Haleigh Shay scored 12 points.
Fort Kent 40, Fort Fairfield 31 — Cassidy Lovely scored 11 of her 14 points in the second quarter, helping the Warriors to a 12-point halftime lead en route to the win at Fort Kent Friday.
Cammi King-DeMerchant notched all 15 points from the foul line for the Tigers. Kourtney West added nine more for Fort Fairfield.
Both teams are now 2-1 on the season.
Southern Aroostook 60, Shead 18 — At Dyer Brook Friday, Southern Aroostook jumped out to a 37-7 halftime lead en route to its win in a rematch of last season’s Class D North tournament final which was won by Shead.
Katelyn Slauenwhite led the way with 14 points. Kassidy Mathers added 11 points and Sydney Brewer contributed 10, while Makaelyn Porter had eight points and seven assists for the Warriors.
Anasia Tucker had five points for Shead of Eastport.
SA led 20-6, 37-7 and 52-9 at the quarter breaks.
Hodgdon 38, Katahdin 25 — At Stacyville Friday, Kora Lambert poured in a game-high 15 points to lead Hodgdon to its victory over Katahdin. Dee Libby led the way for Katahdin with 12 points
Maine Central Institute 51, Caribou 49 — The Huskies outscored the Vikings 22-8 in the second quarter and held on for the win at Caribou Saturday.
Sydney Farrar and April McAlpine led MCI in scoring with 14 points each.
Caribou registered a 20-point fourth quarter to make it close at the end. The Vikes (1-2) were led by Searra Herbert with 19 points and Gabrielle Marquis with 15.
Southern Aroostook 69, Central Aroostook 51 — At Dyer Brook Saturday, the Warriors defeated Central Aroostook. SA’s Makaelyn Porter netted 25 points and had four steals to lead the Warriors to their third straight win. Kacy Daggett chipped in 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Kylie Vining, Kassidy Mathers and Sydney Brewer each had nine points.
For the Panthers (0-2), Kassie Levesque scored 14 points, all in the second half, while Macie Beals added 13 and Breanne Bradbury had 10.
Washburn 38, East Grand 35 — At Danforth Saturday, the Beavers picked up the win as Kassie Farley, who finished with a team-high 14 points, sank two free throws with three seconds left to seal it.
Alexis Carney scored 10 points for Washburn (2-1), while Haleigh Shay had a game-high 20 for East Grand (0-4).
Presque Isle 70, Belfast 27 — Emily Wheaton scored 21 points and Maggie Castonguay tallied 17 as the Wildcats came away with their second blowout win to begin the season Saturday on the road. Maddie Jandreau fired in three 3-pointers to account for all of her nine points.
The Wildcats have averaged a 53-point margin of victory in their wins over Washington Academy and Belfast to begin the season.
Boys basketball
Easton 66, Ashland 51 — The Bears swept the season series against the Hornets with a strong performance in Ashland Friday.
Collin Sotomayor hit for a season-high 24 points and freshman Camden Michaud poured in a career-best 17 for the winners. Matt Pangburn scored 10 points for Easton, now 2-2.
Dylan Haley netted 17 points, Jesse Wortman 14 and Steven Bellanceau 12 for the 0-3 Hornets.
East Grand 36, Van Buren 28 — At Van Buren Friday, Thomas Gilman scored 18 points and hauled down 19 rebounds to lead East Grand of Danforth past Van Buren.
Lendin Stoddard had 10 points for the winners. Luc Perreault’s game-high 21 points paced the Crusaders.
East Grand led 8-6, 15-13 and 27-24 at the quarter breaks.
Southern Aroostook 72, Shead 67 — At Dyer Brook Friday, Jayden Burpee netted 24 points and Garrett Stiltz added 20 as the Warriors outlasted Shead of Eastport. Xavier Morales chipped in 12 for the Warriors.
Ethan Lank netted 31 points for the Tigers, while Darren Turner added 16.
Fort Kent 62, Fort Fairfield 52 — The trio of Caleb Delisle, Camden Jandreau and Jacob Daigle combined for all but two of the Warriors’ points in the victory at home over the Tigers Friday.
Delisle had 21, Jandreau 20 and Daigle 19 for the winners, now 2-1. Malcolm Langner fired in a career-high 19 points and Isaac Cyr added 14 for Fort Fairfield, who suffered its first loss after opening with three consecutive wins.
Presque Isle 78, Belfast 72 — Griffin Guerrette poured in a career-high 40 points, including a 6-for-9 performance on 3-point field goals, as the Wildcats improved to 2-1 with a hard-fought victory in Belfast Saturday.
Guerrette scored 25 of his points in the first half to help PI to a 10-point advantage. The Wildcats stretched the lead to 14 before the Lions came back behind Stanley Sturgis, who scored 25 second-half points. The hosts tied it at 61, but PI went 8 for 12 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to come out on top.
Trace Cyr registered a big game for the Wildcats with 12 points and 11 rebounds and Jonah Hudson scored 15 points and hauled in six boards.
East Grand 71, Washburn 46 — At Danforth Saturday, the Vikings improved to 2-2 on the season with a convincing win over Washburn. Thomas Gilman score 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead East Grand. Lendin Stoddard added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Noah Sixberry had 10 points and six steals and Matthew Potter had 10 points.
For Washburn, Aidan Churchill scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers, while Patrick Saucier added 10 points.
Caribou 43, Maine Central Institute 40 — The Vikings almost coughed up an 18-point halftime lead, but held off the visiting Huskies Saturday.
MCI was within a point with under 20 seconds left before Austin Findlen hit a pair of free throws to stretch Caribou’s lead to three. A 3-point attempt by the Huskies with time running out was off the mark.
Nick Allen scored 16 points and Parker Deprey 13 to lead Caribou, now 2-1. Daniel Garamvolgyi’s 10 points paced MCI, also 2-1.
Hodgdon 66, GHCA 54 — At Hodgdon Saturday, the Hawks beat Greater Houlton Christian Academy. Wyatt Foster led all players as he poured in 22 for Hodgdon. Andrew Tuttle added 18 and Dylan Oliver had 10 for the winners.
For the Eagles, Parker Brewer netted 17, while Isaac Potter added 15.
Jonesport-Beals 66, Katahdin 51 — At Stacyville Saturday, Katahdin fell to the visiting Crusaders. Rig Otero led the Cougars with 13 points, while Hunter Craig added 11 and John McNally chipped in 10.
The Royals were led by Kaiden Crowley’s 22-point effort, with Austin Grant adding 11.
Central Aroostook 91, Southern Aroostook 70 — At Dyer Brook Saturday, Central Aroostook’s Ben Thomas poured in a game-high 32 points, including 8 3-pointers, as the visiting Panthers beat Central Aroostook in a high-scoring affair.
Panther Brayden Bradbury added 15 points, Josh Thomas and Hayden Kingsbury each had 11 and Caleb Harris totaled nine. As a team, the Panthers drained 15 3-pointers in a strong showing from behind the arc.
For the Warriors, Garrett Siltz had 21 points, while Jacob Brooks added 12, Jayden Burpee had 11 and Xavier Morales chipped in 10.
Central Aroostook led 26-12, 48-32 and 71-53 at the quarter breaks.
Hockey
Presque Isle 6, Kennebec River Hawks 2 — The Wildcats defeated the cooperative Waterville-Winslow squad on the road Saturday behind three goals by junior Bailey York and one apiece by the freshman trio of Colby Carlisle, Noah Roy and Gage LeTourneau.
Connor Demerchant dished out a pair of assists for the Wildcats (2-1). Presque Isle held a 38-21 shot advantage, with Andre Daigle picking up the win in goal.
Cooper Hart and Logan Denis scored for the River Hawks (1-2).
Brewer 3, Black Hawks 0 — At Brewer Saturday, the Black Hawks fell 3-0 to Brewer. Results from the game were not reported to the newspaper.
Wrestling
Caribou senior Cory Jandreau was victorious in the 145-pound weight division at the PVHS Wrestling Tournament held Saturday in Howland.
The Vikings had three wrestlers end up as runners-up in their respective divisions: Rylee Saucier in 106, Evan Michaud in 138 and Kirtas Jandreau in 195. Jeremy Bolen was third in 160 and Kaden DeMerchant (152), Jonah Thayer (170), Chloe Kirschmann (220) and Mason Smith (285) all placed fourth.
