HOULTON, Maine — The 6th annual Bill Weber Alumni Hockey Games will be played at the Millar Civic Center on Saturday. Dec. 23, beginning at 3 p.m. in what is sure to be a fun-filled day of skating.
Former Houlton players will lace up their skates as they test their hockey skills against each other in a friendly competition. According to event organizer Chris Weber, Bill’s son, about 30 players have committed to play, which means there will be at least three teams playing a round-robin tournament.
Admission is free and there will be hot chocolate for spectators. Concession also will be available. A 50/50 raffle that benefits the Southern Aroostook Minor Hockey Association also will be held.
Bill Weber passed away in July 2011, and his son has held the alumni games each year in his father’s memory.
“Fair play was his first priority,” Chris said. “Winning never mattered. He always made sure every kid had a fair chance and most importantly had fun playing this great sport.”
Weber was a huge fan of hockey at all levels. He was known to stop into an arena, where ever he happened to be, just to see if a game was going on. He was a huge follower of the UMaine Black Bears and the New York Rangers.
