CARIBOU, Maine — Nordic skiers from high schools across central and northern Aroostook County tasted their first competitive experience of the season Wednesday with a meet held at the Caribou High School trails.

The Vikings were able to corral victories in the team results, while Presque Isle’s Max Bartley and Madawaska’s Isabelle Jandreau came away with individual wins on the five-kilometer course.
The freestyle meet included competitors from Ashland, Central Aroostook, Fort Fairfield, Fort Kent, Madawaska, the Maine School of Science and Mathematics in Limestone, Presque Isle and the host Vikings.
The Caribou boys registered a low score of 18 points by tucking five skiers into the overall top 10. Evan Desmond was third with a time of 17 minutes and 5.6 seconds, Alec Cyr fourth in 17:18.3 and Emerson Duplissie-Cyr fifth in 17:58.8 to lead the Vikings.

Also for Caribou, Nic Sleeper was seventh in 18:16.4 and Devin White ninth in 18:32.9.
In the team scores, Madawaska was the runner-up with 37 points, while Ashland (44) and Fort Kent (46) followed.
Bartley was the fastest male skier in 15:35.6, with Niko Naranja of Fort Kent next in 17:00.8. Others in the top 10 were Reece Voisine of the Warriors (sixth in 18:14.7), James Cyr of MSSM (eighth in 18:30.2) and Garrett Morneault of Presque Isle (10th in 18:34).
Ciara Richards led the way for the first-place Caribou Vikings with a time of 20:20.2 on the five-kilometer course at Caribou High School Wednesday. She placed fifth overall out of 28 competitors. (Don Eno)
Justin Pelletier led Madawaska, placing 14th in 18:40.5. Weston Robinson of Ashland took 25th overall out of 33 skiers in 21:57.3.
For the girls, Caribou’s 31 points gave the team the victory. Three Vikings skiers were in the overall top 10. Ciara Richards was fifth in 20:20.2, Abigail Wimmer sixth in 20:29.1 and Macey Wakem seventh in 20:44.6.
The Owls’ Jandreau was the individual winner in 17:26. Izzy Jackson of Presque Isle took second in 18:00.9 and Dolcie Tanguay of MSSM came in third in 19:02.9. Kristen Main of Central Aroostook was right behind Tanguay in 19:03.8.
The remainder of the top 10 was made up of Jessica Halsey of Fort Fairfield (eighth in 21:01.5), Willow Hall of Ashland (ninth in 21:36.6) and Kassandra Nelson of Ashland (21:40.2).
Madawaska had the second best team score at 53, followed by Ashland with 63. Fort Kent came in fourth with 66 points and was led by Riley Sibley, who placed 14th in 22:29.8. Twenty eight female skiers completed the course.
The next scheduled Nordic event will be a pursuit race in Fort Kent starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 29.
