100 Years Ago – Dec. 26, 1917
On business — Dr. Gordon, of Lincoln, and D. E. Coburn, of Dover, Me., proprietors of the Katahdin Black Fox Co., of Lincoln, were in town last week on business.
Music club — The Houlton Music Club will meet at the home of Mrs. M. L. Buck, Dec. 27. The subject for the evening will be ‘Christmas Music.’ A long and interesting program has been arranged. Christmas carols will be sung in many forms. The Club will be favored with selections by Mr. Emmons Robinson, violinist.
75 Years Ago – Dec. 17 & 24, 1942
Needed — Women between the ages of 18 and 28 are needed at the Sub-depot at the Houlton Air Base to receive training as aircraft mechanics. Women who are selected to receive training will be trained either at Bangor, Maine, or Springfield Mass. for a period of six to 12 weeks, after which they return to the Houlton sub-depot, where they will be employed.
Reopens — The Haywood Cafe, which has been closed for the past several days while undergoing a complete renovation, was reopened for business this week. The interior has undergone a complete change with two rows of booths, one on one side and one in the center, removed. A 40 ft. food bar has been installed and cushions placed on the seats of the remaining booths.
50 Years Ago – Dec. 27, 1967
Winners announced — Winners of the annual home Christmas decoration contest, sponsored by the Houlton Chamber of Commerce, were announced today by the chamber. Entries selected by the judges to receive cash awards were: Darrell Barnes, Harry Baulch, Dr. Edward Williams, Austin Durgin and Earl Lincoln.
Charity Ball — A check in the amount of $1,226.45 was turned over to the Southern Aroostook Association for the Retarded Tuesday, the sum being realized from the Charity Ball held by the Houlton Police Department. The presentation was made by Police Chief Donald Dow to Roger Randall, president of the association for the retarded.
25 Years Ago – Dec. 23, 1992
Gift — The employees of Fleet Bank of Maine have elected to forego their Christmas parties and give $10,000 to The Salvation Army. According to Fleet President Anne Szostak, “Our staff voted to give the gift to provide food to Maine people and gifts to brighten the Holidays of Maine Children. Our research shows that The Salvation Army does both.”
Donation — Cheryl Graham of Louisiana Pacific Corporation delivered Christmas gifts to the Department of Human Services for 25 area foster children. Louisiana Pacific employees donated $1,000 to purchase gifts for foster children in the Houlton area. Cheryl Graham presented to Peter Crovo the many gifts brought to the Human Services office to be distributed to the children.
