CARIBOU, Maine — This year’s white Christmas led to two single-vehicle accidents in Caribou.
Laura Adams, administrative assistant for the Caribou Police Department, said the first accident occurred at noon Christmas Day when a 2014 Chrysler car was traveling south on Route 1 and went off the road. At 11:20 p.m. that night, a 2010 Ford SUV, traveling on the East Presque Isle Road, slid off the road.
Adams said there is no indication if the accidents were caused by a lack of snow tires or driving too fast for the conditions, but added that snow on the surface of the road likely contributed to both incidents.
“We do get an increase of calls for accidents or cars off the road during this time of year,” she said, “or for vehicles that are stuck.”
On Dec. 15, Adams said Caribou Police responded to four weather-related accidents as well as four reports of vehicles off the road between Dec. 11 and 13.
“There were no injuries as a result of any of these accidents,” she said.
The aforementioned incidents occurred on Route 1, Main Street, Route 161, and Aldrich Drive in Caribou.
“There are certain roads due to drifting snow or winds that pose more of a threat for accidents or a car getting stuck,” she said.
Adams added that the Caribou Police Department urges everyone to “slow down and drive carefully” during storms and nasty weather.
