PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s basketball team is back in action following a nearly three-week layoff and will close out 2017 with a pair of games in New London, Connecticut.
The Owls take on the United States Coast Guard Academy Friday at 1 p.m., followed by another 1 p.m. game Saturday against Connecticut College.
UMPI heads into those road contests with a 4-5 record. The team’s last game was played Dec. 10 in Boston, Massachusetts against Fisher College, which resulted in an 80-72 victory.
Kevin Collins leads the Owls in scoring at 18.3 points per game. Deandre Duncombe is next, averaging 15 ppg. Maurice Harris (11.1) and Anthony Chacho (9.1) are the team’s other top scorers.
Harris is the top rebounder at 6.3 per game, while Wilburn Griffths owns a team-best 57.7 field goal percentage. Duncombe is first on the team in 3-point field goal percentage at 45.2 percent.
The Owls, under first-year coach Dan Kane, begin 2018 with home games against the University of New Brunswick-St. John Jan. 6 and 7 as part of the Can-Am Tournament. The first game is at 8 p.m. and the following afternoon, tipoff is 2 p.m. UMPI then hosts Bowdoin College on Jan. 9 at 1 p.m.
Coach Gavin Kane’s UMPI women, with an 0-7 record, also host UNB-St. John in the Can-Am Tournament, on Jan. 6 at 6 p.m. and on Jan. 7 at noon.
