Caribou senior Evan Michaud won his weight division at the PVHS Christmas Tournament Thursday and classmate Cory Jandreau placed third in a very competitive MCI Winter Classic in Pittsfield the following afternoon in varsity wrestling action.
In Howland, Michaud captured first place in the 138-pound division and his Vikings placed third out of nine teams in the final standings.
“This was the one catch that got away as I felt we had a very good chance to win this but fell short,” said Caribou coach James “Chico” Hernandez. “A win here and there and things could have been very different, but I am happy with our overall results.”
The only teams to score more points than Caribou’s 102 were Dexter with 149 and Mattanawcook Academy with 136.
The match highlight was Michaud’s win by fall over Dexter’s Justin Wing in the championship round. Wing was last year’s Class C state champion.
“Evan looked very poised and in control and he dominated,” Hernandez said.
Four Caribou wrestlers placed second in their respective weight classes. They were Jandreau, Kaden DeMerchant, Kirtas Jandreau and Mason Smith. The Vikes also posted a third and a pair of fourths on the day.
On Friday, Jandreau won his consolation final in the 138-pound division at the tourney in Pittsfield which featured eight Class A teams and some of the state’s best wrestlers.
He defeated Sam Leishman of Scarborough by pin. “He looked fabulous and followed the game plan to perfection,” Hernandez said.
Hernandez said the team’s freshman wrestlers turned in some good outings “and have been improving.”
He said others besides Jandreau winning matches at the MCI Winter Classic were Rylee Saucier in 106, Michaud in 132, DeMerchant in 145 and Smith in 220.
