Three Caribou councilors sworn in

CARIBOU, Maine — Caribou City Clerk Jayne Farrin swore in newly elected city councilors Hugh Kirkpatrick, Mark Goughan and Nicole Cote on Tuesday.

Kirkpatrick and Goughan are new to the City Council. Cote had been elected for a partial term after councilor Shane McDougall’s resignation earlier this year, and then was re-elected for a full three year term in November.

Since Mayor Gary Aiken’s term recently ended, Deputy Mayor David Martin led the Jan. 2 organizational meeting, informing guests that he would do so until council selects a new mayor.

Out of seven people sitting on the council, six voted to elect Martin as Caribou’s new mayor and one voted for Goughan. The councilors then unanimously voted to elect Nicole Cote as deputy mayor.

Martin, who has been on council since 2007, was humble about the appointment, and briefly thanked his fellow councilors before moving onto discussing appointments for other municipal positions.

“Thank you for your confidence,” he said. “I will do the best I can.”
