100 Years Ago – Jan. 2, 1918

    Taking a course Harold F. Cates left Saturday for Cleveland, Ohio, where he is to take a special course in the Willard Storage Battery factory.

    Concert Mrs. Cora M. Putnam has negotiated with Professor William R. Chapman, director of the Maine Music Festivals, to bring Vernon Stiles, the renowned tenor, Florence Anderson Otis, the brilliant soprano, and Nicholas Garagusi, the famous Russian violinist, to Houlton January 15, 1918, for a most brilliant concert, to be given in the Heywood Theatre.

75 Years Ago – Jan. 7, 1943

    Reelected Frank A. Peabody was re-elected president of the Houlton Trust Company at the annual meeting of the board of directors held Tuesday morning at the banking rooms. Dr. F. W. Mitchell was re-elected vice president, E. C. Joy was re-elected secretary and treasurer and Stanley D. McElwee was re-elected assistant treasurer.

    Accepted position Mrs. Althea Brockway recently accepted a position in the U.S. Employment Service Office, Market Square.

50 Years Ago – Jan. 3, 1968

    Meeting Mrs. Jean Larson was in Augusta where she attended the board meeting of the Maine Health Systems Agency.

    Promotion David I. Dorsey, president of the First National Bank of Aroostook, has announced that Andrew P. White has been promoted to the position of assistant vice president  and manager of the Houlton offices.

25 Years Ago – Jan. 6, 1993

   Time stands still Wes Adams has to climb two ladders to get to the clock on top of the County Courthouse, old ladder rungs bend with age when climbed to get to the small clock room where cogs, a weight, and a huge pendulum keep time for the county seat. The clock measured the time well until shortly before Christmas, when the hands on its four faces stopped at about 4:20. Surprisingly, though, the clock has not had any major repairs or parts replaced during the 16 years that Adams has worked on it. He said his predecessor, Spot Cameron, worked on it for 25 years and did not think he had done any major work on it either.

   Shopping spree winner — Randy Foster, of Houlton, was congratulated by Bonnie Hunt, a salesperson at McGillicuddy’s Furniture, for winning the $500. shopping spree.
