Monday’s Martin Luther King Day holiday doesn’t translate into a day off for local high school sports teams.
An alpine ski meet is scheduled at Bigrock Ski Area in Mars Hill, beginning at 10 a.m. with separate runs in the morning and the afternoon. Fort Kent, Central Aroostook, Presque Isle and Caribou are among the teams participating. Only one meet has been held so far this season as two meets have already been cancelled due to stormy weather or cold temperatures.
In basketball, five doubleheaders are planned involving teams from the region. Three are held locally, and all are makeups following previous postponements. The other two were previously scheduled and are being held downstate.
Southern Aroostook takes on Central Aroostook in Mars Hill, beginning with the girls game at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys contest at 7 p.m.
The girls matchup features two of the most successful teams in Aroostook County. The 9-1 Warriors, in second place in Class D North, meet up against the 7-3 Panthers, ranked fifth in Class C North. The teams met in Dyer Brook way back on Dec. 16, with Southern Aroostook collecting a 69-51 victory.
The Panther boys head into their game with a 9-1 mark and No. 2 ranking in Class C, while SA stands at 4-6 and in sixth in the D ranks. The first meeting resulted in a 91-70 win by Central Aroostook, also played Dec. 16 in Dyer Brook.
Easton hosts Hodgdon, with the girls playing at 2:30 p.m. and the boys at 4 p.m. The Hodgdon girls (4-5 and in 15th in Class C) won 46-20 when the teams played on the Hawks’ home floor Dec. 29. Easton heads in with a 1-7 record and in 10th in Class D. The Bear boys are 5-5 and in eighth place in Class D and Hodgdon is 3-8 and in 14th in Class C. The Hawks took the first matchup Dec. 14 by three points.
Ashland plays at Washburn, with the boys tipping off at 4 p.m. and the girls at 5:30 p.m. The Class D matchups are the first of the season between the two schools. The Hornet boys stand at 2-8 and are in 12th, while Washburn is still searching for its first victory as they enter at 0-8. The Ashland girls are currently 6-5 and in sixth place and Washburn is 3-6 and in ninth.
The Caribou girls and boys are in Dover-Foxcroft to take on the Foxcroft Academy Ponies in the only meeting this season between the two schools. The girls have a 1:30 p.m. start time and the boys play at 4:30 p.m.
The Viking girls are 6-5 and in fourth place in Class B and the host Ponies are 2-6 and in 13th. The Caribou boys are 4-7 and in eighth and Foxcroft Academy is 3-6 and in 12th.
The Presque Isle squads travel to Old Town, with the girls game set to start at 1:30 p.m. and the boys at 4:30 p.m. It is the only time the schools square off during the regular season.
The Wildcat girls enter with a 6-2 mark and are in seventh in the B standings and the Coyotes are 3-6, good for 12th place. On the boys side, PI is 7-2 and ranked second in the division and Old Town is 4-6 and in 13th.
Only two games were played Friday. The Madawaska girls handed Washburn a 46-23 defeat on the Owls’ home floor. Jenna Dugal powered the winners, now 5-3. with 24 points and Brianne Thibeault tossed in eight more. The Beavers’ Kassie Farley was her team’s leading scorer with 12 points.
The Owl boys moved to 6-2 with a 59-34 triumph over the Beavers, who remained winless. Robbie Lausier’s 23 points led Madawaska and Aidan Churchill scored 12 for Washburn.
