Rylee Chasse, a seventh-grade student at Easton Junior/Senior High School, won the school competition of the National Geographic Bee on Jan. 4 and a chance at a $50,000 college scholarship.
The school bee, at which students answered questions on geography, was the first round in the 29th annual National Geographic Bee. Thousands of schools around the United States and in the five U.S. territories are participating in the 2018 bee. The school champions, including Chasse, will take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers on that test in each state will then be eligible to compete in their state bee in April.
The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state winners to participate in the national championship rounds in May 2018. The first-place national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the society, including a subscription to National Geographic magazine, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands. The program will air on television.
Everyone can test their geography knowledge with the GeoBee Challenge, an online geography quiz at www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee, which poses 10 new questions a day, or by downloading the “National Geographic GeoBee Challenge” app, with more than 1,000 questions culled from past bees. Bone Builders
The Bone Builders class meets each Monday and Friday starting at 9:45 in the Recreation Room at the Manor.
Bone Builders is a free strength training, balance and exercise program. The program’s goal is to prevent and reverse the effects of osteoporosis. This class is for women and men who want to stay healthy. You must have a doctor’s permission to join the class.
To be successful, you should commit to attending twice a week for six months. You’re never too old; studies have shown that strength and fitness can improve at any age. This program relies on weight training and balance exercises to protect against fractures caused by osteoporosis. Each one-hour classes, held twice a week will increase muscle strength, balance and bone density. This program is offered through Area on Aging, Cary Medical Center and the Easton Recreation Department.
