101 Years Ago – January 18, 1917
Church chairs — A handsome set of leather upholstered chairs for the communion service had been presented by the Ladies’ Aid to the U. B. church, and were in place Sunday. A dozen of the same pattern have been ordered for the choir loft.
Officers installed — The rank of Page was worked last night in General Custer lodge, No. 47, K. of P. The officers for 1917 were installed by W. M. Tompkins, the regular installing officer being absent. After installation, the members enjoyed an oyster stew nicely served by the caterer, Mr. Guy Berry.
75 Years Ago – January 21, 1943
Star Boy Scout — Morton Bartlett Jr. of Troop 173 was made a Star Scout at a Court of Honor held at the Methodist church. Wayne Grant and Billy Blackwell, both of Troop 173, received Tenderfoot poins. In Troop 171, David Akely and Bobby Carpenter received First Class badges and badges in metal and woodworking. Russell Akeley and Clayton Langley were both advanced to second class, and tenderfoot pins were awarded to Murray Rand, Norman Jones and Russell Sprague.
Maine Masque — Willa Dudley of Mapleton, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Dudley, a senior in the College of Agriculture, majoring in home economics and a member of the Dean’s list, Chi Omega sorority, the Home Economics club and the Maine Outing club, was one of 23 new members initiated into the Maine Masque Theatre at the University of Maine, Orono. The recognition of membership in the Masque was given to her for her part in the Masque production, “Arsenic and Old Lace.”
50 Years Ago – January 17, 1968
Bonspiel playoff — The closest a Presque Isle team got to the top was fifth place but that didn’t stop anybody there, least of all the local men, from having a good time curling in the First Annual Donald A. Lindsay Bonspiel held at Presque Isle. After the broom straws had settled at the end of a regulation eight ends, Plaster Rock and Florenceville, two New Brunswick teams had tied for first place with 95 points. Behind were Perth-Andover with 85 points, Woodstock with 80, and Presque Isle No. 2 with 74.
CB Club — The Central Aroostook Citizens Band Radio Club held its annual meeting. Joe Cormier was elected president, Gwen McEntee vice president, Phil McIsaac re-elected secretary-treasurer. There were three board of director members also elected: Bob McEntee, Orville Warner and past president, Ivan Carter.
25 Years Ago – January 20, 1993
Ski honors — The Lady Wildcat alpine ski team topped four other squads during a meet held at Lonesome Pines Trails in Fort Kent. Sandy St. Pierre, Becky Bonenfant, Amy Brown and Katie Bell all finished among the top 13 in the dual giant slalom event, ran in that fashion because of the lack of snow. St. Pierre was seventh in the first run and fourth in the second, while Bonenfant was fifth and seventh, Brown 10th and eighth and Bell 13th and 10th, respectively. Presque Isle finished with a total of 64 points, besting Madawaska by eight. Fort Kent, Central Aroostook and Caribou rounded out the field. The Lady Owls’ Kayla Baker was the winner in both runs.
Insurance awards — The Aroostook Association of Life Underwriters honored several members at a Presque Isle awards banquet. Awards given were the National Sales Achievement Award (NSAA), for which recipients must be full-time insurance agents, achieve production standards for life and health insurance and write a minimum of 100 paid policies, and the National Quality Award (NQA), for which recipients must be full-time agents, write a minimum of 25 policies and achieve a 90 percent persistency for at least 13 months. Recognized were Rollan Walker, NSAA and NQA; Roland A. Kofstad, NSAA; Raymond A. Piper, NSAA; and Alfred C. Giberson, NQA; all of Presque Isle; Andrew P. Daigle of Madawaska, NSAA and NQA; Arthur H. Thompson of Limestone; NSAA and NQA; and David P. Corriveau of Caribou, NQA.
