SMYRNA, Maine — A local family was displaced Monday after their home was destroyed by fire.
According to Smyrna Town Manager Candy Nevers, the home belonged to Robert and Susan Green, and was occupied by their daughter Brittany Green and her husband, Jaimie, whose last name Nevers did not know.
“Brittany and her family lived there,” she said. “They have an 18-month-old son and lost everything.”
Oakfield Fire Chief Joe White confirmed Thursday that the house was destroyed and indicated that it was not insured. White said he did not have specifics on how difficult it was to combat the fire because he was out of town at the time the call came in.
White said he was told the resident had been thawing pipes and then left for a while.
“When he came back he found the home on fire,” the chief said. No one else was in the home at the time and no one was injured.
The Houlton Fire Department also responded to provide mutual assistance with the blaze on the Smyrna Center Road around 4:30 p.m. Monday.
Nevers said a “GoFundMe” account was established by her cousin Kimberly Tarr. As of Thursday afternoon, that account had raised $2,690 for the couple. Additional needs are size 18 month or 2T boys clothing.
The American Red Cross also was contacted to assist the family with lodging, food and clothing immediately following the fire.
