Ski teams compete in Mars Hill

MARS HILL, Maine — Bigrock Ski Area hosted its second alpine meet in five days, with Greenville, John Bapst and Mattanawcook joining Aroostook County programs Fort Kent, Presque Isle, Caribou and host Central Aroostook for giant slalom races in the morning and slalom races in the afternoon.

In the girls’ GS, Shelby Cowan of Greenville had the fastest time for her two runs at 1 minute and 28.79 seconds. Fort Kent skiers Alisha Guimond (1:36.59) and Riley Sibley (1:36.93) were second and third, respectively.

Caribou’s Hope Shea was fourth overall in 1:37.85 and Presque Isle’s Isabelle Higgins was fifth in 1:39.08.

Fort Kent won with 18 points, but the Wildcats were second with 45 as Eleanor St. Peter, Grace Bemis and Sheridan Boucher took the 12th through 14th positions. Greenville, Caribou, John Bapst and Mattanawcook of Lincoln followed in the team rankings.

For the boys’ GS, the Warriors dominated with 13 points as they had five of the fastest eight skiers, led by Austin Plourde. He was the overall winner in 1:28.83.

Presque Isle, led by Riley Roderick in fifth in 1:33.14 and Zechariah Morse in seventh in 1:34, took second place as a team with 45 points. Caribou’s Scott Bray was the ninth fastest individual in 1:37.65 and his Vikings were third with 68. Central Aroostook was three points back and was paced by Bryant Grass, who was 10th overall in 1:37.77.

Greenville, John Bapst and Mattanawcook followed in consecutive order.

In the afternoon slalom event, Cowan completed the sweep with a time of 1:19.2. She was 3.4 seconds ahead of Guimond, while Lyndsay Ouellette of Fort Kent was third in 1:24.23. The Warriors again placed first overall as a team with 16 points.

Higgins was 11th (1:37.96), St. Peter 13th and Boucher 14th for the second-place Wildcats, who scored 54 points. Caribou came in third with 60 and Shea was eighth in the standings at 1:29.98.

Greenville and John Bapst tied for fourth with 67 points and Mattanawcook came in sixth.

Plourde made it back to back victories as he was just 16/100ths of a second faster than teammate Bryce Madore. Plourde’s winning time was 1:19.43.

Central Aroostook placed second as a team with 55 points and had three skiers in the top 10. Lane Grass was sixth in 1:24.21, while Bryant Grass and Taylor Campbell were ninth and 10th, respectively.

Kyler Caron had the Wildcats’ fastest time of 1:24.99, good for seventh overall. PI placed fourth with 64 points. Bray came in 12th and his Caribou squad posted 76 points, putting the Vikings in fifth.

John Bapst took third, Greenville was sixth and Mattanawcook seventh.

The next alpine races will be held at Fort Kent’s Lonesome Pine Trails Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
