ELLSWORTH, Maine — Rylee Saucier and Angel Riopelle were the standouts for an shorthanded Caribou wrestling team at a tournament held Saturday at Ellsworth High School.
Saucier, in the 106-pound division, and Riopelle, in 132, collected three victories each. Saucier placed second in the weight class and Riopelle was third.
Saucier now has the third most victories on the season with 18. Coach James “Chico” Hernandez said Riopelle is now up to 11 and “is improving and could be a darkhorse to place in the upcoming [Penobscot Valley Conference] tournament.”
Brothers Max and Cage Lister also placed third in their respective divisions, Max in 160 and Cage in 182, while Matt McCormack came in fourth in 152. Kaden DeMerchant (145) and Jeremy Bolen (160) also competed but did not place.
Caribou was without three wrestlers who were out with injury and four who failed to make weight and as a result were ineligible to compete. Hernandez said there were no team scores in the Ellsworth tournament due to a unique round-robin format that was utilized.
The Vikings have one more regular season tournament, set for Saturday in Bucksport. The three events to follow are the PVC championships at PVHS in Howland on Feb. 3, the Class B North regionals at Mt. View High School in Thorndike Feb. 10, and the Class B states, for those who qualify, on Feb. 17 at Wells High School.
