AUGUSTA, Maine — Carmen Bragg was a part of four state championship basketball teams at Washburn District High School and her success has carried on at the collegiate level at the University of Maine at Augusta.
Bragg hit a personal milestone during a Jan. 20 conference game at Vermont Tech, reaching the 1,000-point mark for her career.
The senior was fouled on a layup off a pass from Caitlin LaFountain in the first quarter to put her over the mark.
Head coach Jennifer Laney said Bragg, a 5-6 point guard, has been instrumental in the team’s fast start. The Moose are 15-2 heading into Wednesday’s game at Southern Maine Community College.
“I dare say she is one of the most skilled shooters in our conference and I have to continuously remind her to shoot the ball as she is extremely unselfish,” said Laney, noting Bragg is currently tied for fourth in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association in 3-point field goal percentage at 40.9 percent.
“She is a triple threat on the offensive end and her speed and athleticism shine through on the defensive end.”
Bragg, a biology major, averages 12.6 points per game this season and is a 90.5 percent free throw shooter. She also averages 4.6 assists and 3.6 rebounds per contest. For her career, she has started 100 of her team’s 102 games.
Layne said she has enjoyed having Bragg on her team the past four years and calls her “a coach’s dream.”
“It’s been such a blessing to coach her and she has made a mark on the Moose program, one that will last long after she graduates,” Laney said. “She is truly a leader on and off the court and someone I have relied on for the last four years.”
She is the daughter of Mark and Diana Bragg of Washburn.
