CARIBOU, Maine — Caribou school board members asked RSU 39 administrators to re-evaluate a disciplinary action, but due to legal reasons can release no further data.
A draft of minutes from a Jan. 24 RSU 39 meeting indicate that, upon exiting executive session, board members unanimously voted to “re-evaluate the discipline actions of school administration” and to “see that no retaliation occur toward student athletes” for “not finishing the season.”
The administration cannot release the name of the individual disciplined, according to RSU 39 Superintendent Tim Doak.
Doak did say that the administration takes all complaints and perspectives from the parents of students seriously.
“Whenever someone has a concern, point of view, or allegation,” he said, “we look into it very seriously. We always consider the parents’ perspective when determining what’s really happening.”
The superintendent said the school will look into further disciplinary action if need be, and that he wants parents to know that he personally looks into any issues that come to his attention “as quickly as they are told to us.”
The board secretary did not record any public comments regarding this matter in the meeting minutes, which indicate that Board Chair Tanya Sleeper told attendants “comments with regard to executive sessions will not be entertained.”
He added that, since it’s a personnel issue, he cannot say exactly what the disciplinary action was, or who received discipline.
Caribou High School Athletic Administrator David Wakana said via email that he and CHS staff are “not allowed to comment on this matter.”
