Island Falls notes (week of January 31, 2018)

I had a phone call recently from Sally Morton, and she informed me that Dusty Brown will not be having Country Jamboree at the Big Valley clubhouse in the near future. I think that is a good idea as the weather lately hasn’t been too good and the temperature hasn’t moderated much.

Since the latest spell of weather my dooryard is one big lake of frozen snow and ice, and the secondary roads around town are not too good. I may be housebound for awhile as I don’t like to drive when it’s icy.

The McLean family, who had opened up a shop on the main drag, have decided to close it and, therefore, we are no longer able to buy their good homemade breads, pies, scones and cookies. They also had, in the fall, a great selection of vegetables, pickles, plus many other things for sale that were brought in from the surrounding towns. I understand that the family are maybe moving to Millinocket, where the population is larger and profits would be better.

I am still feeding lots of deer, who arrive every evening and gobble up very quickly the bread I have thrown out for them. I haven’t seen them walking around down back during the day and ambling along towards the trail to Woodlawn Heights and Dyer Brook, but have seen them in late evening around the area, probably waiting for me to cast out the chunks of old bread.

I still have not seen a cardinal. Last year I had a pair of them and they were there at the feeders about every day.

I saw a little red squirrel the other day, but they are unable to get at my new feeders and the big grey squirrel sometimes shows up, quite frustrated, as he also cannot get at the seeds. He sure tries, but no go.
