Weather prompts changes to Moosestompers events

HOULTON, Maine — Forecasted bitterly cold temperatures have prompted organizers of the 22nd annual Moosestompers winter carnival to reschedule many of their events for this coming weekend.

Nancy Ketch, one of the event organizers, said Thursday that due to the frigid temperatures and severe wind chills predicted for Friday night and Saturday, some outside activities have been rescheduled to Sunday. Temperatures for Friday night call for a low of minus-seven, while Saturday’s high temp is predicted to be a high of 9 degrees.

“We want everyone to have a fun and safe weekend,” she said.

Nighttime sliding on Derby Hill has been canceled for Friday evening, while the ATV/UTV/snowmobile parade originally scheduled for Friday has been moved to Sunday at noon.

The majority of Saturday’s outdoor events — sliding, snow sled rides and horse-drawn carriage rides — have all been rescheduled to Sunday because of the projected wind chill temperatures.

Those who wish to slide on Derby Hill Saturday may do so at their own risk, Ketch said, but there will be no supervision provided. The bonfire set for Saturday will also be moved to Sunday afternoon.

Sunday’s events will now feature sliding on Derby Hill starting at 11 a.m.; a sawdust prize search for children at 11 a.m.; and the Vital Pathways booth inside the Exhibit Hall opens at 11 a.m. providing free hand warmers and coffee.

The 34th annual 5K Wild Katahdin Trust Snow Run has also been rescheduled to Sunday at 11 a.m.; food concessions in the exhibit hall will be offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; horse drawn sleigh rides and hayrides will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and snow sled rides begin at noon.

The revised schedule can be found on the group’s Facebook page.
