HOWLAND, Maine — Five of the 10 Caribou wrestlers who competed in Saturday’s Penobscot Valley Conference championships earned top-four finishes, leading the team to 50.5 points and sixth place out of the 14 schools represented.
Seniors Evan Michaud and Cory Jandreau both placed third, while Rylee Saucier, Caleb Robbins and Kirtas Jandreau all placed fourth. The meet was held at Penobscot Valley High School.
Michaud pinned Jacob Ireland of Foxcroft at the 1:37 mark in his 145-pound division consolation finals match, while 138-pound wrestler Cory Jandreau pinned Dakota Doane of Mattanawcook in 2:26, also in the consolation final, to cap a day in which he won three of four matches. Jandreau now owns 111 wins in his career.
Saucier lost to PVC champion Travis Hutchinson of Bucksport on a 14-6 decision in the 106-pound semifinals, which Viking coach James “Chico” Hernandez said felt like a victory after she had been pinned by Hutchinson on two occasions earlier in the season.
Robbins’ day was highlighted by an upset win over fourth-seeded Ethan Moulton of PCHS. Robbins had lost to him twice in early-season matches, but was “a wrestling machine,” according to Hernandez, and handed him a 20-9 loss Saturday. He enjoyed one other victory, an 8-6 decision over Codi Fanning of PVHS.
In 195, Kirtas Jandreau was pinned by Dexter’s Eric Bennett 40 seconds into the third round in the consolation finals.
Foxcroft Academy took the team title with 174 points and Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln was the runner-up with 134.
Next up is the Class B North regional on Saturday, Feb. 10, at Mt. View High School in Thorndike. The top four competitors in each weight division advance to the state meet at Wells High School Feb. 17.
