HOULTON, Maine — A smaller than usual crowd came out Sunday for the 34th annual Wild Katahdin Snow Run.
Originally scheduled for Saturday morning, the race was pushed back a day due to extremely cold weather conditions that included temperatures that felt like negative 20 degrees with the wind. On Sunday, a hearty group of 17 runners and two walkers came out to participate. Last year, there was 27 runners.
Katahdin Trust partnered with the Houlton Parks and Recreation Department and the Aroostook Musterds running club to sponsor this year’s event.
Funds raised from the race will stay in the community and benefit the Houlton Recreation Department in its effort to raise funds for some much needed playground equipment upgrades, including a sensory swing and wheelchair-accessible glider. This new equipment would ensure that all children have the chance to feel the exhilaration of moving through space in fun, enriching ways, according to event organizers.
PJ Gorneault was the top overall runner as he completed the course in 17 minutes, 12 seconds. Angela Ewings was the first female finisher at 23:42.
Complete results from the race were: 1, PJ Gorneault, 17:12; 2, Thomas Beckum, 18:20; 3, Chris Rines, 19:55; 4, Bruce Clark, 20:44; 5, Cole Winslow, 21:15; 6, Jesse Sandstrom, 21:29; 7, Craig Reese, 22:05; 8, Bradley Fox; 23:18; 9, Kurt Kafferlin, 23:33; 10, A.
