Black Hawks remain playoff hopefuls

HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton-Hodgdon-Southern Aroostook-Katahdin Black Hawks remain in the playoff hunt despite suffering setbacks in recent games.

The squad fell to Camden Hills 3-1 Saturday at the Midcoast Recreation Center in Rockport, but hope to bounce back Friday, Feb. 9, against Old Town/Orono.

Sporting a 4-8-1 record, the Black Hawks are currently the No. 6 seed in the Class B North standings. The top six teams make the playoffs.

On Tuesday, Jan. 30, the Black Hawks hosted John Bapst and battled to a 0-0 stalemate through overtime, resulting in the first tie of the season for the team.

“We need to find a way to score,” said Dave Wilson, assistant coach. “We are consistently out playing our opponents, but can’t seem to finish the play with a goal. So we will need to refine our attack by maybe coming more from the outside or from behind the net.”

He added the team is playing well in most every other facet of the game, but still has room for improvement.

The Black Hawks are hoping to remain in the playoff mix, because once the playoffs begin, anything can happen.

“We need all the points we can get and that means winning most of our remaining games, which we are very capable of doing,” Wilson said. “We have two home games left and four on the road, all with teams we have had good games with. So it is up to us. It is time to bare down and get the job done.”
