100 Years Ago – Feb. 6, 1918
New lease — C. E. Calvin, who recently leased the Cogan building on Bangor St., is renovating same and will soon remove his stock of new and second-hand furniture, etc., so that he will be better prepared than ever to serve his patrons.
Busy place — The Grange Mill was a busy place on Saturday when hundreds of patrons stood in line to get a ‘look in’ on a cargo of oats that had just been unloaded, and many were obliged to drive away empty-handed.
75 Years Ago – Feb. 11, 1943
Graduates — Miss Ardith Lakin, a graduate of Bates College who has been attending Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston, completed a postgraduate course there. Miss Lakin received the highest honors in her class with 179 points.
Celebrate anniversary — Houlton Elks next week join their half-a-million fellow members of 1,400 lodges throughout the United States in celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Order on Feb. 16, 1868, in New York City, by Charles Vivian and a group of fellow actors and theatrical men.
50 Years Ago – Feb. 7, 1968
New equipment — The Hatheway Drug Store, known everywhere as The Rexall Store, has just installed a new and up-to-the-minute soda fountain and includes all of the newest improvements in soda dispensing.
25 Years Ago – Feb. 10, 1993
Donation — Trooper David McPherson, representing the Maine State Troopers Association, presented an $800 check to Donna Baietti, director of the Battered Women’s Project Houlton shelter. The money has been earmarked for the shelter’s children’s programs in Houlton, most notably the construction of a new fence. The donation represents slightly more than one-half of the total amount of $1,500 given by the troopers association for BWP’s programs throughout The County.
Student volunteers — Students from Houlton High School will be working at area grammar schools as big brothers and big sisters and visiting nursing homes as part of social services this semester. Participating were: Crystal Fitzpatrick, Angela Powers, Erika McCarthy, Heather Crabbe, Craig Bossie, Kevin Burleigh, Derek Anderson, Arnaud Deraemaeker, Nathaniel Stewart, Angela Bartlett, Christina Silliboy, Robyn Stewart and Lisa McDonald. Kellie Rossignol was absent.
