CARIBOU and PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Thanks to the efforts of Maine youth, soup kitchens, food banks and food pantries were truly the big winners on Super Bowl weekend, Feb. 3-4.
Parish youth ministry groups throughout the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland held soup pots to collect monetary and food donations from parishioners as they left weekend Masses.
Young people from the Parish of the Precious Blood collected $1,200 at Holy Rosary Church in Caribou and St. Mary’s in Presque Isle, all of which will go to help those in need in the area.
Throughout the weekend, Catholic youth gathered almost $15,000 and hundreds of food items, according to Dave Guthro, communications director for the diocese. He said 100 percent of the proceeds are donated to local charities to help tackle hunger in the community.
