Skiers solid at league championships

MARS HILL, Maine — Local skiers turned in strong performances at the Aroostook League alpine championships held at Bigrock Ski Area in Mars Hill on Saturday. 

For the boys, Lane Grass of Central Aroostook placed second in the slalom with a time of 1 minute and 18.57 seconds and was third in the giant slalom in 1:28.04.

Teammates Taylor Campbell and Bryant Grass also finished in the top 10 in both disciplines. Campbell was fifth in the GS in 1:32.13 and ninth in the slalom in 1:25.79, while Grass took sixth in the slalom in 1:24.84 and seventh in the GS in 1:32.99.

Riley Roderick of Presque Isle turned in top-10 performances in both events. He was eighth in the slalom in 1:25 and 10th in the GS in 1:35.66. Teammates Kyler Caron and Zechariah Morse were also among the fastest skiers, with Caron taking sixth in the GS in 1:32.82 and Morse seventh in the slalom in 1:24.94.

Scott Bray of Caribou placed 13th in both the slalom in 1:33.45 and the GS in 1:38.33. Aiden Plante was 12th in the GS in 1:37.53 and 14th in the slalom in 1:34.27.

Wisdom’s Jake Roy was first in both competitions. He won the slalom in 1:16.7 and the GS in 1:26.94.

Fort Kent won the overall team title with 46 points. Central Aroostook was second with 69, followed by Presque Isle (95) and Caribou (125).

On the girls’ side, Caribou’s Hope Shea took fifth place overall in the GS in 1:37.17. She was also 12th in the slalom in 1:42.72. Fellow Viking Maren Moir captured the eighth position in the slalom with a time of 1:34.77.

Leading the Wildcats was freshman Isabelle Higgins. She was eighth in the GS in 1:39.85 and ninth in the slalom in 1:40.09. Emily Bemis was the next fastest PI skier, taking 11th in the GS and 13th in the slalom.

Alisha Guimond of Fort Kent placed first in the GS in 1:32.2, while teammate Riley Sibley won the slalom in 1:23.13.

The Fort Kent girls had a perfect score of 20 to take first place in the team standings. Presque Isle was the runner-up with 98 and Caribou had 102.

The Class B state meet will be held at Bigrock Ski Area in Mars Hill Monday, Feb. 19, and Tuesday, Feb. 20. The girls race at 9 a.m. and the boys at 12:45 p.m. both days.
