Maine State Police arrested a Mount Chase man and charged him with multiple violations, including speeding and escape, Thursday morning after he allegedly tried to elude a trooper in a pickup and then on foot.

Trooper Caleb Adams had attempted to stop Steven Pearl, 37, on the Shin Pond Road in Mount Chase, but the driver of the 1998 Mazda pickup truck refused to pull over, according to a press release issued Thursday afternoon by state police Sgt. Chad Fuller. Fuller did not indicate in the release what prompted the trooper to initially seek to stop Pearl.

The driver instead continued on until he pulled his vehicle into the driveway of his own residence and then jumped out and fled into the woods, police reported.

A state police canine team, several game wardens and a border patrol agent all were involved in the subsequent search that soon located Pearl, according to Fuller.

Pearl was arrested and escorted from a snowsled trail back to the side of the road. But while waiting to be taken to jail, the suspect took off running again, according to the release.

He did not make it far, however, and fell into the snow after running about 100 yards, according to Fuller. Pearl then was successfully taken to the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor.

He is charged with aggravated operating after revocation, eluding an officer, escape, attaching false plates, speeding 20 mph over the posted speed limit and failure to have a valid inspection sticker.
