Black Hawks surge to third straight win

HOULTON, Maine — The winning streak continues for the Houlton-Hodgdon-Southern Aroostook hockey team.

The Black Hawks skated to a 3-2 victory over Hampden Academy Friday evening in what was senior night for the squad at the Millar Civic Center. With the win, the Black Hawks (7-9-1) are fifth in the Class B North standings and have secured a spot in the playoffs for the second straight year.

The postseason begins Feb. 27 at the higher seed. One final game remains on the schedule for the Black Hawks as the team plays Lawrence/Skowhegan/MCI Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 2:30 p.m. at Colby College.

Last season, the Black Hawks fell to Hampden Academy in the quarterfinals.

Senior AJ Henderson scored goals in the first and third periods to help the Black Hawks to victory. Nick DeLucca added a goal in the second period. Gavin Vining had two assists and Drew Marino added one assist.

Elijah Matheson had 11 saves on 13 shots in goal for the Black Hawks.

Marcus Dunn and Seth Shawley each scored a goal for Hampden Academy. Cooper Ryan had 13 saves on 16 shots.
