The Big East Conference annual basketball awards have been announced and players from both Caribou and Presque Isle are prominent on the lists.
Players of the year are both Wildcats, as Griffin Guerrette earned the boys award and Emily Wheaton the girls honor.
Guerrette was a four-time winner of the Big East Player of the Week Award, while Wheaton captured the honor three times out of the nine weeks. Both led the league in scoring and were among the leaders in several other statistical categories.
Making the Boys All-Conference First Team along with Guerrette were Isaac Varney, Jacob Godfrey and Keenan Marseille, all of Hermon; and Zach Harris of Ellsworth.
Wheaton was joined on the Girls All-Conference First Team by Lauren Plissey of Hermon, Maddy Candage of Mount Desert Island, Trinity Montigny of Ellsworth and Crystal Bell of John Bapst.
The boys’ Second Team includes Connor Robertson of Orono, Hyatt Smith of Foxcroft Academy, Derek Collin and Andrew Phelps, both of MDI; and Kyle Case of Washington Academy.
Caribou’s Gabrielle Marquis and Searra Herbert are part of the girls’ Second Team, with Grace Phillipon of John Bapst, Mackenzie Beaudry and Caitlin Tracy of Hermon the others.
Boys making honorable mention were Drew Shea of MDI, Tihomir Babic of Washington Academy, Parker Deprey of Caribou, Jackson Curtis of Ellsworth, Jonah Hudson of Presque Isle and Finn McConomy of MDI.
Honorable mention selections for girls were Hannah Richards of Old Town, Julia Watras of MDI, Alex Allain and Maddie Pullen, both of Hermon; Katelynn Bagley of Ellsworth and Paige Espling of Caribou.
Mark Reed of Hermon was named Boys Coach of the Year and Brent Barker of MDI picked up the girls honor. Orono won the boys’ Sportsmanship Award and Washington Academy took the girls’ honor.
Both Hermon teams were recognized as conference champions, with MDI the runners-up for boys and Presque Isle for girls.
Each school selects its scholar-athlete, Paul Soucy Spirit Award and Defensive Player Award winners.
Jacob Marker and Gabrielle Marquis are Caribou’s scholar-athletes, while Adam Paterson and Chrissy Skidgel took the honor for Presque Isle.
Caribou’s Trevor Hale and Abby Parks and Presque Isle’s Jack Beaulieu and Savannah Rodriguez captured the Paul Soucy Spirit Awards.
The Defensive Player Award went to Austin Findlen and Alexis Rodriguez for Caribou and Hudson and Madison Michaud for Presque Isle.
All the award winners will be recognized during the Big East Conference’s Senior All-Star Games, which will be played in March 3 at Hermon High School. The girls game is at 1 p.m. and the boys play at 3 p.m. Awards will be presented between the two games.
