PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Under newly hired UMPI baseball coach Roger Stinson, the annual Owls Baseball Clinic is a go on March 3. Players in grade 2 up through high school age are encouraged to attend.
At the opening session, offered from 9-11 a.m. at Wieden Gymnasium, catchers and players will be introduced to a variety of drills used by the UMPI team that focus on receiving, blocking, footwork, exchange and throws.
The second session, from noon-2 p.m., also at Wieden Gym, is a pitching clinic where proper throwing mechanics that reduce overuse injuries while adding velocity and accuracy will be stressed. Players will participate in a variety of drills and film study will also be incorporated.
A hittter’s session is planned from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at Wieden Gym, with players participating in a number of hitting drills to promote good mechanics and proper swing techniques. Players will watch themselves on film and hit off the new video pitching machine.
The final session is fielding and takes place both at Wieden Gym and Gentile Hall. Basic fielding techniques for both infielders and outfielders will be reviewed and attendees will go through drills. This meets from 5-7 p.m.
Players are encouraged to bring their own catcher’s gear, bats, helmets and gloves. Register soon to be guaranteed a T-shirt. The cost is $40 for one session, $70 for two, $90 for three and $100 for all four. Contact Stinson by email at roger.stinson@maine.edu or by phone at 290-1647 for more information.
