CARIBOU, Maine — The Women’s Choice Award has named Cary Medical Center one of America’s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics for the fifth year.
The award signifies that Cary is in the top 17 percent of 2,720 U.S. hospitals offering obstetrics.
“We are so proud and honored that our hospital has been recognized by Women Certified as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Experience in Obstetrics for a fifth year,” said Cary Medical Center and Pines Health Services CEO Kris Doody, RN.
“Cary and Pines have a long tradition of excellence in obstetric care. This recognition is further evidence that women in Aroostook County appreciate the high level of clinical quality, compassionate and personal, patient-centered care that our staff provides.”
The America’s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics distinction is based on the following specific criteria: the percentage of patients reporting through the HCAHPS survey that they would definitely recommend the hospital; patient safety ranking based on 11 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ measures of infection and complication rates; low rates of early elective deliveries (between 0-1 percent); and Baby-Friendly USA designation, a World Health Organization (WHO)/United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) initiative to support best practices for breastfeeding education and counseling.
“We now have women coming to Pines and Cary from all over Aroostook County,” Doody continued. “We hear a lot about how the two staffs coordinate so well and understand the needs of the families, including the expecting dad and siblings. We really have something quite special that creates that ‘wow’ experience for new moms and their families.”
Doody said making every delivery unique and personal is key to the hospitals success.
“Our team of physicians, nurses and support staff all work cohesively together to completely focus on providing our moms, her newborn, and family, with that extra attention and personalized care that they’ll always remember as being part of this very special time in their lives. Our moms tell us that from the moment they visit our Maternal/Child Services, they feel how professional and caring the staff are, and that they feel right at home and are part of our Cary and Pines Families.”
Cary has seen dramatic growth in the number of deliveries in recent years. In 2012 the hospital experienced the largest number of births in 17 years and for each of the past five years Cary has experienced over 200 births.
“Pregnancy is one of the most special times in a woman’s life,” said Delia Passi founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award. “Our award gives a woman the confidence that her choice of a hospital for her delivery will be the best in terms of quality care and patient safety for her and her baby. As the trend of women waiting longer to start their families continues, having the Women’s Choice Award seal is especially important for older moms who face increased risk and need a top hospital to provide her care.”
According to Passi, Cary Medical Center is one of 452 award recipients representing the hospitals that have met the highest standards for obstetrics across the U.S.
