Rotary discusses Planet Head Day

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center.

The special speaker was Kevin McCartney, professor at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and a Presque Isle Rotarian.  He spoke about being a “head hunter” for Planet Head Day, an event that supports space science and cancer education.

Each Planet Head raises money for the local C-A-N-C-E-R (Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery) support group through contributions from local businesses, organizations and individuals.

Participants get a “bald” cap or haircut before having their head painted like their favorite planet, dwarf planet or moon.  This year’s event, the 12th annual, will take place on Saturday, March 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wieden Hall Gymnasium at UMPI.

This year Plant Head Day will go international as a simulcast event happening in Poland, where McCartney will be.  Poland raises funds through the event to support a local children’s cancer hospital.

For more information, contact McCartney at 768-9482, Jim Stepp at 554-7837 or Susan Black at 764-4647.

Winterfest 2018

Plans are currently being made for Winterfest 2018.  This year’s events will take place on Thursday, March 8, through Saturday, March 10.

Some events this year will include a MZ Winterfest Snowbunny Pageant, Rotary supper, match your mate, silent auction, music, penny carnival, St. Patrick’s breakfast, basketball (grade 1 & 2 and alumni), cribbage, whoopie pie contest (adult and juvenile categories) and more.

At the mountain, in addition to the Torchlight Parade and fireworks, the Cardboard Classic is back. Get your sled ready – cardboard and duct tape only. They also plan on holding a special poutine dinner with several types of toppings available.

We are challenging all our former MZ contestants to get ready to strut your stuff again this year. There is no age or gender limit — so sign up to make this a fun and entertaining event.
