101 Years Ago – March 1, 1917

PIHS wins — The Presque Isle High School basketball team added another victory to their long list by beating Houlton High 61-10. On account of it being so one-sided, the game was not very interesting to watch. The ball was in the hands of the local team practically all of the time and some fine exhibitions of team work were shown.

Baptistry at Washburn — Alfred Strobeck, the contractor and builder, put in a baptistry at Washburn, giving his services, and also some money during his stay there through the extra meetings held by Harry Taylor. Mr. Strobeck was a great help in the singing and led a fine chorus.

75 Years Ago – March 4, 1943

Marine sergeant — James Reginald Higgins, son of E. Vivian and the late Viola Coffey Higgins had been promoted to staff sergeant. Stationed at Parris Island, SC, he enlisted in the marines in 1940. In a letter to his father, he stated that his company had a new basketball gymnasium and that their team participated in three games a week.

Eastern Star — Lunar Chapter, No. 126, Presque Isle, held a semi-public installation of officers on Feb. 26, at the Masonic temple, with an attendance of over 250 members and guests. Worthy Matron Dorothy Barnes welcomed the members and guests, after which the installing officers were presented. Miss Margaret Ranlett, P. M., matron; Mr. George Barnes, patron; Mrs. Gladys Whitnew, D. D. G. M., chaplain; Mrs. Mina Hone, P. M., marshal; and Mrs. Edna Cook, P. M., organist.

50 Years Ago – Feb. 28, 1968

Association — Aroostook State College, an associate member, was among 34 teacher preparation collegiate institutions received into membership of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education at its February meeting in Chicago which Dr. Albert W. Purvis, Dean of Instruction, attended.

Charter members — Lynn and Linda Haines, twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Haines, graduates of PIHS and juniors at the University of Maine in Orono, have been pledged as charter members of Epsilon Sigma chapter of Alpha Delta Pi social sorority, the newest sorority on the University of Maine’s campus, adn 55 coeds were pledged. Alpha Delta Pi, the oldest secret society for college women in the world, was founded on May 15, 1851, at Wesleyan Female College, in Macon, Georgia.

25 Years Ago – March 3, 1993

All-District Choice — Senior Deb Draper of the University of Maine at Presque Isle was named to the All-District V select team for the second time. She averaged 18.2 points and 11.2 rebounds per contest while leading the Lady owls to their best record since the 1985-86 season. She ended her career at UMPI as the schools all-time women’s leading scorer with 1,342 points. She also recorded 760 rebounds. Over her four years, Draper averaged 16.2 points and 9.2 rebounds in 83 games.

Drive chairman — The Aroostook Medical Center officials elected Paul R. Cariani the chairman of the hospital’s second annual fund campaign. His responsibility to raise funds for the medical equipment needed by the medical center to improve the quality of care.

Senior club officers — New officers of the Star City Senior Citizens elected during a meeting were Bill McConnell, president; Grace Everett, vice president; Dorothy Beaulieu, secretary; and Steve Naas, treasurer.
