Youth advance to state Hotshot competition

CARIBOU, Maine — Fifteen youth secured trips to the Portland Expo on March 18 for the Maine Recreation and Parks Association/Maine Red Claws Hotshot State Championships.

The Caribou Wellness and Recreation Center was the site of the Thursday, March 1, regional event, with 98 youths participating in what regional director Matt Bouchard of the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department called the best showing in several years. Shooters from as far north as Madawaska and as far south as Houlton represented their communities.

Youth needed to qualify at their local competition in order to make it into the regionals. Hotshots is a basketball skills competition that incorporates shooting, rebounding and dribbling. Points are accumulated by shooting from one of several hotspots on the floor in a one-minute time period.

First- and second-place shooters at the regionals earned the right to move on. Results from Thursday are as follows:

Ages 9-10 girls: first place, Madison Oakes of Presque Isle, 76 points; second (tie) Logan Curtis of Washburn and Sadie Tardif of Presque Isle, 70 points; ages 9-10 boys: first, Brandon Porter of Presque Isle, 119 points; second, Owen Corrigan of Caribou, 108.

Ages 11-12 girls: first, Madelynn Deprey of Caribou, 94; second, Grace O’Connell of Presque Isle, 84; ages 11-12 boys: first, Bryce Martin of Fort Fairfield, 110; second, Reece Cavagnaro of Caribou, 105.

Ages 13-15 girls: first, Juliana Hundley of Presque Isle, 92; second, Eva Callioras of Easton, 82; ages 13-15 boys: first, Gavin Akeley of Presque Isle, 113; second, Alex Oakes of Fort Fairfield, 112.

Ages 16-18 boys: first, Dylan Marrero of Caribou, 95; second, Isaiah Milliard of Fort Fairfield, 57.

Those participating at the state level will receive free admission to the 1 p.m. Maine Red Claws’ game against the Lakeland Magic.
