PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The United Way of Aroostook, in partnership with Aid for Kids, recently distributed a large donation of LEGO building blocks with a value of $3,500 to the Central Aroostook Association, based in Presque Isle.

Pam Powers, director of adult services commented that adults in her program have been enthusiastic about the donation.

“This generous donation allows for us to utilize another tool in individualized programs that specifically work on dexterity and teamwork, among other life skills,” she said. “We appreciate and truly benefit from this contribution.”

The benefits of LEGOs go well beyond their conventional use for play, Powers said. Creating with them is an opportunity to build fine motor skills, to manipulate and strengthen hands, engage in collaborative play, and gain a sense of accomplishment.

“As with any building project, it also teaches patience while working toward a solution,” she said. “LEGOs allow young and old to focus on a task and implement creativity.”

Sherry Locke, executive director of the United Way of Aroostook, explained, “The United Way of Aroostook prides itself on offering support to the programs and agencies in Aroostook County and provide for the people who live here.  By distributing the LEGOs to schools, programs and agencies across the County, we have been able to support local work in a new way.

“This project allows creative, multi-sensory, open-ended experiences to the children and adults who will benefit from the donation,” Locke said.

Central Aroostook Association has distributed the 72 sets of LEGOs agency-wide.
