LaVone Walters was recently recognized as Chapman’s oldest resident during a ceremony when she received the town’s Boston Post cane.
Chapman Select Board Chair Patricia Sutherland made the presentation.
The holder of a municipality’s Boston Post cane is recognized for serving as a longtime community member and a role model for fellow citizens. Walters has lived on the east side of Chapman for nearly 50 years.
A group of family and neighbors gathered with Walters to share in the event.

Shaw explained, “This year’s pageants will showcase the various talents of the pageant contestants and our current reigning queens. There will be singing, dancing, stand-up comedy, musical kata (Karate) and a monologue.”
There will be group and individual performances that include current reigning queens: Sarah Morneault, Miss Mapleton; Meg Casavant, Junior Miss Mapleton; Elizabeth Wing, Pre-Teen Miss Mapleton; and Madison Oakes, Little Miss Mapleton. This year will be the first year for selecting a Mini Miss Mapleton.
This year’s pageants are sponsored by the Class of 2019. Tickets will be on sale and can be purchased at the door of the Presque Isle High School Auditorium for $7. Visiting queens from other communities are welcome to attend as guests of the Mapleton Pageant.
Youth Trip Fundraiser
On March 10, 2018, the snow fell and blew wildly in Mapleton, but inside the Mapleton Lions Hall there was warmth and fun at the 2018 Discover D.C. spaghetti dinner fundraiser. Bill Guerette, trip coordinator, expressed the students’, families’ and staff’s thanks for the support shown Saturday evening.
This year, 42 eighth-graders from Presque Isle Middle School will travel to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., during April vacation.
Despite some pretty heavy snowfall and slippery roads, over 140 people attended the supper and raised over $1,300. This wonderful opportunity for learning and travel would not be possible without the help and support of our community.
The Discover DC Trip group extends a huge thank you to Adam Ryder for making the delicious spaghetti sauce for the supper, the Mapleton Lions’ Club for donating the use of the hall, Save-A-Lot and Teresa Bonville for food donations. All the food and supplies for the dinner were donated by parents and family of students going on the trip.
A big thank you to the parents who volunteered as servers, including Scott and Christa Galipeau, Shelley and Skylar McAtee and Lyndsay Maynard, along with the two Renee and Ryan duo’s of Renee and Ryan Bragdon and Renee and Ryan Guerrette. Cindy Learned served the desserts with the assistance of many of the students who will be going on the trip. Adam Ryder had assistance in the kitchen by Ron McAtee and Marshall White and dishwashers Jordan Carmichael and Diane Leavit.
A raffle was held for two sets of Sea Dogs tickets, which were won by Alan Kidney and Jylie Maynard. A handmade hope chest, made by a family friend of one of the students, was raffled and won by Brenda Wood.
Finally, a special thank you goes to the teachers who organize and plan this trip each year. They are Bill Guerrette, Diane Leavitt, Leah Gagnon, Jordan Carmichael and Pat Bragdon. All put in many hours planning the trip, organizing and hosting fundraising events. Their work and that of many others made Saturday’s dinner a successful event.
Guerrette added anyone wishing to make a donation to help with trip expenses may send the donation to the Discover D.C. Trip, c/o Bill Guerrette, Presque Isle Middle School, 596 Skyway Street, Presque Isle, ME 04769. Make checks payable to Discover D.C. Trip.
