HODGDON, Maine — A little bit of Broadway will be making its way to the stage of Mill Pond School this coming weekend as Disney’s “The Lion King Jr.” comes to life Friday, April 6, and Saturday, April 7.
Featuring the music and lyrics by Elton John and Tim Rice, the story tells the tale of “Simba,” a young lion cub who must learn the responsible ways of leading the animals of Africa in the grand “Circle of Life.”
“This is the second production for Hodgdon,” Ashley Wheeler, who is co-directing the play with Margaret York, said on Monday. “Last year we used the Mill Pond students and this year it will be middle/high school students with a few Mill Pond students.”
Featuring elaborate costumes, including African masks created by Hodgdon Middle-High School teacher Stacy Ramsey, the play features all of the songs made popular by the Disney animated movie, and a few new ones created for the Broadway version.
On Friday, the curtain drops at 7 p.m., while Saturday’s performance has a 6 p.m. start time. Rehearsals have been going well, Wheeler added.
“The students have been working since December on this play,” she said. “They have overcome many fears to become their character. It has not been easy, because all of the characters are animals.”
Last year, the school brought drama back to the district with its production of “Alice in Wonderland,” which featured a massive ensemble cast of 40 students.
This year’s production features Joseph Scott, Serena Lukfin, Brooke Wheeler, Samantha Shank, Katie McQuarrie, Kennady Wright, Reiley Wright, Sabra Scott, Mallory Williams, Faith Howland, Kyla Morrison, Alaina Campbell, Justice Scott, Brody Rouse, Katie Ledger, Matthew Lufkin, Hannah North, Ashley Shaw, Jade Akins, Madison Smith, Alex Walker, Monique Polchies, Mikyla Howland, Lydie Carter, Luke Walker, Aidynn Woods, Oisin Gardner, Jersie Valiante, Trinitee Neher, Hayden Crowley and Hannah Little.
The Walkers are from Greater Houlton Christian Academy.
Tickets are $8 for adults or $4 for seniors and children and can be purchased at the door on the day of the performance. Proceeds benefit the After School Program and Drama Club at Hodgdon. For more information, call 532-2413 ext. 2202.
