New school should be named after Caribou

To the editor:

I’d like to thank the Caribou School Board and the naming committee for the time that they voluntarily spend on school issues. When I read thru the article of discussion about the new school name, there were many good points made.

I agree we have too many involved, creative, gifted citizens from Caribou and surrounding areas who either graduated from or volunteered or taught in the system to chose one to name the new school after.

I understand the conflict that is faced by potentially offending towns who participate in RSU 39, by naming the school “Caribou.” That being said, we have seen participants of the RSU change their minds and break away, leaving the core community and school: Caribou.

I suggest the name “Caribou Regional Education Center,” or “CR ed” or some variation of “Caribou Regional.” When our school teams go downstate to play Schenck High School, for instance, this school’s name doesn’t begin to tell anyone where the school is or even who it represents. (It’s in East Millinocket)  Identity is important. I talk with buyers about all school systems throughout central Aroostook. The school departments need to remember that they are in the marketing business, that it is a competitive business. Students can now attend any school of choice, so schools need to stand out, be recognized.

I ask that the train get put back on the track. “Caribou Regional” says it all, without offense to others.
